'The Twelve' were fabled to be the dozen mutants who would one day rise up and lead a war against humans.

In a diabolical plan to obtain the power of a god, Apocalypse gathers the Twelve powerful mutants, intending to acquire their powers using an ages-old Celestial machine.

The role of each mutant was explained by Apocalypse; Magneto and Polaris were the opposing magnetic poles.  Storm, Sunfire and Iceman were the elements.  Cyclops, Phoenix (Jean Grey) and Cable were the unity of family (father, mother, child).  Bishop and Mikhail Rasputin were time and space.  Professor X was the mind and the Living Monolith was the core.  Nate Grey (aka the X-Man) would also be used as a host, "the Thirteenth".

Apocalypse intended to transfer his own consciousness into Nate's body and then use the energies of the Twelve to evolve to a god.

The X-Men defeated the Apocalpyse in fierce battles in which the life of their team-mate, Cyclops, was apparently lost.  Heartbroken over her husband's death, Jean Grey took a leave of absence from the X-Men.
