The Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage and Logistics Directorate is an organisation for counter-terrorism, running both covert and open military operations.  

Originally formed to counter the threat of HYDRA, SHIELD works with government and military forces across the world to counter threats. SHIELD also keeps close links with the superhero community and often calls on Captain America, the Avengers and Fantastic Four for help. 

The Helicarrier, a huge permanently-airborne aircraft carrier, was a long-term base of SHIELD (destroyed and rebuild several times).  Aside form its own impressive forces and weaponry, SHIELD uses LMDs or Life Model Decoys - extremely lifelike androids sent into dangerous situations to avoid human casualties.
