The Guardians of the Galaxy first appear in Marvel Super-Heroes #18. They exist within an alternate timeline of the 31st century, known as Earth-691, and act as protectors of the Milky Way.
The original team consisted of Vance Astro, Yondu Udonta, Martinex T'Naga and Captain Charlie-27. Later members included husband and wife duo, Stakar Ogord and Aleta Ogord (both of whom have been known as Starhawk) and Nikki.
After defeating the Badoon, the Guardians of the Galaxy became adventurers and have travelled to Earth's current reality several times, and were honorary members of the Avengers.
Connection to the 2008 Guardians:
During their second mission, the team that was to become the standard timeline's incarnation of the Guardians (Earth-616), discover a time-displaced Vance Astro in a block of ice floating in space. It is his introduction as "Major Victory of the Guardians of the Galaxy" that inspires the Earth-616 team to take up the name.
Connection to the Guardians of the Galaxy film:
Various members of the original Guardians of the Galaxy team appear in the film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as part of the Ravagers. Michael Rooker appears as Yondu Udonta, Sylvester Stallone and Michelle Yeoh as Stakar and Aleta Ogord, Michael Rosenbaum as Martinex T'Naga and Ving Rhames as Charlie-27. Miley Cyrus also has an uncreditted cameo as the voice of Mainframe (in the comics, Mainframe is a future version of the Vision and a companion of the original Earth-691 Guardians).
