The Flash is the name taken by generations of superheroes with the ability to tap into an extra-dimensional energy called the 'Speed Force'. The Flash's speed allows him to vibrate through objects, create explosions through friction and - when he's at his top speed - manipulate time and bridge dimensions.
The famous Flash heroes are:
Jay Garrick (Flash I): Jay Garrick accidentally inhaled a radioactive liquid, giving him immense super-speed. He was a founding member of the Justice Society of America and the wartime All-Star Squadron.
Barry Allen (Flash II): When a lightning bolt shattered laboratory chemicals, Barry gained the power to move at near light-speed and took on the name of his hero, the original Flash, Jay Garrick. Barry Allen helped herald in the Silver Age of heroes and is one of the founders of the Justice League.
Wally West (Flash III): Wally West, nephew of Barry Allen, suffered a similar accident to Flash II. West became the 'Kid Flash', junior partner of the Flash, and co-founded the Teen Titans. When Barry Allen died saving the universe, Kid Flash took on his identity.
Bart Allen (Flash IV): First appearing as the hero, Impulse, Bart Allen, grandson of Barry Allen, was born with his grandfather's speed. He took on the identity of Kid Flash in the Teen Titans and went on to become the fourth Flash.
